Why Pick a Gable Roof Shed?

When you're choosing a new storage shed, you'll have a choice of roof designs. This usually comes down to a gable roof that slopes down on both sides or a flat roof that may have little or no slope in it.

You may be more concerned with the size and style of your shed rather than its roof, but the roof is an important factor. Choosing a gable roof may make your shed more useful and may make it last longer. What are the advantages?

Gable Roofs Give You More Space

If you have a flat roof on your storage shed, then the head height in the shed is uniform and straight. The inside ceiling gives you the same footprint as the roof. However, a gable roof can give you more space in the shed. This design creates additional height in the interior of the gable. This makes it easier to store bigger items without having to lean them against walls. You also get a more spacious feeling in the shed. The extra head height stops the shed from feeling as enclosed. A flat roof may make the shed feel less spacious.

Gable Roofs Handle Bad Weather Better

Although some flat roofs are slightly pitched, they aren't as good at handling some weather problems as gable roofs. If it rains hard, then a flat roof may not have enough of a slope to allow the rainwater to fall off the roof. This water can pool on a shed roof in heavy rain. These pools have nowhere to go. While they will ultimately dry out, they can also drain into the shed's interior from the roof. If water comes into your shed this way, it can damage both the shed and the things you keep in it.

In contrast, a gable roof has a steeper slope on both sides. Water washes down it immediately and doesn't pool. As long as the roof is intact, rain won't get inside.

Snow can also be a problem with a flat roof because the snow is more likely to sit on the roof until it melts. It then melts on the roof rather than off it. The slope on a gable roof encourages snow to slide off it more quickly. As soon as the weather warms up, the snow starts to melt, and gravity will then let it slide off the roof before it all turns to water. If you want to make sure that the things inside your shed stay dry, get a gable roof.
